Teacher's guide for The Science of Genetics
by Carl Schopf
Introduction
Use this WebQuest to help 7 - 9 Science students learn about The Science of Genetics. The goal is to get students engaging in critical thinking.Overview
Main Topic: The Science of Genetics Subtopics: Genetic Engineering, Cloning, Forensics, Genetic Testing Grade Level: 7 - 9 Subject(s): Science Learning Goal: engaging in critical thinking
Vision and Reality
If the learning goal were achieved in the most ideal of perfect worlds it would look something like:
The students will be put into groups of four. Each student will be assigned anaspect of genetics to independently research using a list of websites given to them as well as their own searches of web sites. After completing a report on their own aspect of genetics, they will collaborate in the group of four to reach a consensus and prioritize monies given by the federal government for further research. Each student will present their own research to their small groups so all members are familiar with all aspects. They will then collaborate to originate a funding solution. The groups will then present their funding proposals to the class and the 'President' with evidence to back up their reasons. This final stage will involve peer and self assessment. At the conclusion of this project, the students will have had the opportunity to practice some previously learned technologies and experience and learn some new technologies.
However, what I anticipate probably looks more like:
Based on the Vision set for this activity, the actual reality is more likely to be
The What - If Inventory
To give the activity its best chance at helping students learn, I assembled this list of possible resources:
Technology Resources
Internet Web Sites
CLass email software
A word processor(capable of doing hyperlinks)
Internet Potential
Research
On-line Collaboration and Discussion
Possible Collaborations
Small group discussion on and off-line
Ask an expert Email
Special Events
Group presentations to class
General Resources
AT least one computer with Internet access and power point software
A classroom set of general biology textbooks, appropriate to the grade level and including information on genetics.
Standards
Under the Ohio state Science standards, this WebQuest incorporates the following science standards.
LIFE SCIENCES
*Explain that many of the nasic functions of organisms are carried out by or within cells and are similar in a ll organisms.
*Explain that multicellular organisms have a variety of specialized cells that perform specialized functions.
*Recognize that the likenesses between parents and offspring are inherited.
*Recognize that in sexual reproduction new combinations of traits are produced, which may increase or decrease an organisms chances for survival.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
*Explain how technology influences the quality of life.
*Recognize that science can only solve some questions and technology can only solve some human problems.
*Examine how scince and technology have advanced through the contributions of many different people and times in history.
