Teacher's guide for The Chinese Cultural Revolution WebQuest
by Helen Hall
Introduction
Use this WebQuest to help Year 11-12 Modern History students learn about Chinese Cultural Revolution. The goal is to get students engaging in critical thinking. Students will be assigned individual/pair roles depending on the size of the class. They should be given independent research time for their 'role' research. It is then proposed that they come together to produce a brief report on the impact of the Cultural Revolution on a range of Chinese people. This report could be in the form of an email to the teacher, submission for expert review, or a Powerpoint slide show of the key points (including appropriate images if possible) with notes provided.Overview
Main Topic: Chinese Cultural Revolution Subtopics: Evaluating Personal Experiences, Expert Jigsaw Activity, , Grade Level: 10 - 12 Subject(s): Social Studies Learning Goal: engaging in critical thinking
Vision and Reality
If the learning goal were achieved in the most ideal of perfect worlds it would look something like:
Students will be assigned a site to research a series of questions to research. They will then report to the other students their findings. Students will then synthesise this information into a final paragraph analysing the experiences of Chinese people during the Cultural Revolution.
However, what I anticipate probably looks more like:
Based on the Vision set for this activity, the actual reality is more likely to be individual exposure to the changes brought about for at least one individual/family during the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
The What - If Inventory
To give the activity its best chance at helping students learn, I assembled this list of possible resources:
