Introduction

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander's health in Australia has long been a real concern to the community as a whole. In this Knowledge Hunt you will explore the topic of aboriginal health, specifically major causes of morbidity and mortality, major factors contributing to their health status and an examination of the role of governments in maintaining health for all aboriginals in both urban and rural communities.

Students are required to address three criteria:

1. A knowledge of the health status of Australians.

Describe how the health status of the indigenous community compares with the wider Australian community.

Describe the determinants of the health status of the indigenous community.

2. Understanding the role of governments in maintaining and promoting health.

Outline the action that could be taken by all levels of Government to improve the health status of indigenous people.

3. Use and analysis of information.

Relevant data is used and analysed in the development of the response to the question.

Questions

  1. Compare the health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders with the health status of the wider Australian community, using at least 6 examples of differences. Eg: Higher rates of heart disease, life expectancy 20 years less than other Australians etc.
  2. Explain six factors that contributes to the poor health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. For example, they face discrimination in different aspects of life including employment, housing, education, overcrowded housing etc.
  3. Select one strategy or program that has been or could be implemented in an Aboriginal community and describe them. In the description, identify the level/s of government that have responsibility for the strategy.
  4. Explain how these strategies would assist in promoting the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. To do this refer to the appropriate factors influencing health and the major cause of morbility and mortality.

Having finished your research you should now have gained further knowledge of the health status of Australians and be able to describe how the health status of the indigenous community compares with the wider Australian community. In addition you will now also have greater awareness of the role of governments in maintaining and promoting the health status of Indigenous Australians.
