Introduction

Use this Knowledge Hunt to help students studying Health and Human Development complete Outcome One in Unit 3 of the VCE.

Vision and Reality

If the learning goal were achieved in the most ideal of perfect worlds it would look something like:

In completing this Hotlist it is expected that students will address three criteria.

1. A knowledge of the Health Status of Australians.

2. An understanding of the role of governments in maintaining and promoting health.

3. The ability to use and analyse information to develop a suitable response to questions.

In addressing this criteria students be working independently at times but also collaboratively in class with fellow students, classroom teachers and a teacher librarian. Students be communicating with real world mentors via guest speakers, email and video conferencing. In addition, students be learning new technologies as well as having the opportunity to show mastery of familiar technologies. Writing skills will be enhanced through analysing, emailing and editing. Questions to prompt student thinking & discussions will be developed to encourage, memorizing, reflecting, conceptualizing and problem-solving. In perturbing students into new thinking it is anticipated the students will be able to emotively connect with the topic of aboriginal health and therefore gain greater understanding of the topic they are researching.

Based on the Vision set for this activity, the students will be involved in individual and group work to promote information literacy skills and encourage understanding of the various aspects of the Aboriginal Health through discussion and debate.

To give the activity its best chance at helping students learn, I assembled this list of possible resources:

Technology Resources

Students will have access to the computers in the library and/or multimedia centre to complete this online activity.

Internet Potential

They will be able to complete the work requuirement online 24/7 as it will be available on the Internet

Possible Collaborations

The work requirement will be planned, taught and evaluated between the HHD faculty staff and library staff. Classes and collaborative teaching will be scheduled in the library, multimedia centre and classrooms where the students will have adequate access to computers.

Special Events

A Guest speaker on aboriginal health will be invited to speak to the students. In addition, the students will be encouraged to conduct personal research through interviews, email contact etc. with suitable individuals to further their understanding of the topic.

Standards

Successful completion of this task must meet the VCE requirements as set out in the study guide published by the VCAA.
