Introduction

'What do you want to be when you grow up?' is a question we are often asked. This task provides you with the opportunity to investigate what interests you and discover the careers that may suit the person you are.
In completing this Subject Sampler and associated activities all responses should be recorded in a word document that will be then placed in your Teachers drop folder when completed.

What does the term 'career' mean to you? To assist with a formal definition you could refer to the text 'Industry and Enterprise Studies VCE Units 1 and 2' page 45 or search the web

The C a r e e r Interests GameŠ

  1. Write a paragraph describing your interests and abilities. What do you like? What are you good at? Once you have done this self reflection use this site to identify the personality type that is most like you. Record this down in your word document.

  2. Select the personality type for further detail and possible careers that would suit you. Provide a written summary of what this personality type means.

  3. Make a list of five careers that interest you most. You will refer back to these later.


Another Career Quiz

  1. Have a go at this to help you determine your areas of interest.

  2. Copy the graph into your word document and provide a written explanation of what it shows in terms of possible careers you should consider.


The National and State Skills Shortage Lists for 2002

  1. See where the careers that interest you are on the Skills Shortage List.

  2. Record these in your workbook.

  3. Do you need to reconsider the careers that interest you? why? why not?


JobSearch

  1. Select Browse Category and make a list of 5 occupations that interest you. List these in order of preference.

  2. Research in detail the position you placed at the top of your list. To assist you withthis research identify 10 questions that you have and them research to find the answers.

  3. Complete the Job Search Knowledge Hunt for more detailed questions on your career of interest.


Job Guide 2002

  1. Identify three other things you would like to know about this career and use the Job Guide to help you find this information.



Conclusion

Do you have an answer to the question 'What do you want to be when you grow up?'

Hopefully this task has helped you reflect on your areas of skill and interest and how these may assist you in determining a future career path.
