Teacher's guide for Drink, Drunk, Drive: Why We Must Legislate WebQuest
by Sandra Gardiner
Introduction
This WebQuest is designed to help students in Year 10 PDHPE learn about and understand the wider consequences of road accidents. The activity focuses on reasons why young people make up a large proportion of road deaths, and encourages students to develop ideas and opinions as to how the road toll in this age group can be reduced. The goal is to have students engage in critical thinking and to share their ideas on the topic with other students in the class.
Overview
Main Topic: Drugs, Drinking and Driving Subtopics: Drink Driving, Road Toll Statistics, Legislation relating to drinking and driving, Grade Level: 10 - 12 Subject(s): Phy Ed & Health Learning Goal: engaging in critical thinking
Vision and Reality
If the learning goal were achieved in the most ideal of perfect worlds it would look something like:
Through this activity students will research the effect that drinking and drug use will have on driving ability. Through this activity they will appreciate the different perspectives of key stakeholders in the road safety argument and develop a set of policy suggestions for reducing the road toll amongst young drivers (age 17-25).
However, what I anticipate probably looks more like:
Based on the Vision set for this activity, the actual reality is more likely to be that students will be able to identify causes of motor vehicle accidents in young people and identify some already formulated ways to reduce this. Students at the higher level of the spectrum will be able to develop a set of policy suggestions for reducing the road toll.
The What - If Inventory
To give the activity its best chance at helping students learn, I assembled this list of possible resources:
